A stainless steel coffee plunger brews filter coffee with nothing but hot water, which makes it the fallback for room service, functions and venues without an espresso machine. Stainless steel coffee plungers also hold their heat far better than glass, and they survive being carried on a tray.

Listed elsewhere as a coffee plunger stainless model or a stainless coffee plunger, they sit alongside commercial coffee kettles and the rest of our commercial coffee equipment range.

These are the top FAQs for Stainless Steel Coffee Plungers

Why choose stainless steel over a glass plunger?

Heat retention and survival. Glass loses temperature within minutes and breaks on a tray or a trolley; a double-walled steel body holds the brew hot and takes the handling.

For room service and conference catering that is the whole argument. Move them on a catering trolley.

What size plunger suits room service?

A single or two-cup plunger per room, so each guest gets a fresh brew. Larger plungers suit a meeting table where everyone pours at once.

Check the stated cup capacity on each listing rather than judging by body size.

What grind do I need for a plunger?

A coarse grind. Espresso grind clogs the mesh, muddies the brew and makes the plunger very hard to press.

A grinder with a coarse setting covers both; see commercial coffee grinders.

Does the water need to be off the boil?

Just off boiling is the usual guidance, because water straight off a rolling boil scorches the grounds. A kettle with temperature control makes that repeatable.

See commercial coffee kettles for controlled pouring, or a hot water urn where volume matters more than precision.

How long should coffee sit in the plunger?

Press when the brew is ready and decant if it will not be drunk straight away. Coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps extracting and turns bitter.

For holding brewed coffee at volume, insulated beverage storage is the better tool.

Is a plunger an alternative to an espresso machine?

For filter-style coffee, yes. It will not make espresso, so it cannot produce a flat white or a latte, which is what most Australian customers order.

Where espresso is expected, a commercial coffee machine is the equipment; a plunger is a supplement.

How are steel plungers cleaned?

Strip the plunger assembly, wash the mesh and the plate separately and dry before reassembling. Coffee oils collect in the mesh and go rancid if the screen is only rinsed.

Detergents are in commercial kitchen cleaning supplies.
