A commercial umbrella shades the tables outside, so the footpath or the courtyard still seats customers in the middle of the day. Commercial outdoor umbrellas are heavier than a domestic umbrella, the canopy can be replaced on its own, and the base or fixing is matched to the span. The outdoor range also covers outdoor heaters and outside ashtrays.

Two formats cover most venues. A centre-pole market umbrella drops through a table hole or stands in a weighted base, and is the simplest and most stable choice. A cantilever umbrella puts the post to one side so the space under it is clear, which suits a run of tables or a lounge setting. Professional outdoor umbrella frames are usually aluminium or steel; timber suits a sheltered courtyard.

Restaurant outdoor umbrellas need the right base under them. The weight or fixing each model needs is stated on its product page — use that figure rather than guessing, because an under-weighted umbrella is the one that moves. Commercial umbrellas for restaurants can also be repaired in parts, so a torn canopy on a restaurant umbrella does not mean buying the whole thing again.

Footpath and outdoor trading rules are set by your local council, so check with them about the area and any fixings before you order. Then tell us the table layout and the exposure and request a callback — we will work out the span and the base with you. See the tables in cafe tables.

These are the top FAQs for Commercial Outdoor Umbrellas

Market or cantilever?

Market umbrellas are simpler, cheaper, more stable and easier to replace parts on, and the pole through the middle of a table is not a problem for most venues. Choose cantilever when the pole would be in the way: a lounge setting, a run of banquette seating, or a space where you want the shade to reach across furniture that cannot move.

Cantilevers need more base weight or a fixed mount because the load is off to one side. That makes them a bigger commitment on a leased footpath. Where the furniture is fixed anyway, such as a run of commercial cafe benches, the cantilever earns its cost.

How much base weight does an umbrella need?

Use the figure on the product page for the model you are buying. It changes with span, frame and whether the umbrella is centre-pole or cantilever, so there is no single number that is safe to quote and we will not invent one.

If the umbrella goes through a table hole, the table is doing part of the job and the base requirement changes again. Tell us the table you are using and we will confirm what the umbrella needs.

What happens in wind?

Close it. No commercial umbrella is a wind-rated structure, and the damage from leaving one open in a gust is to the frame, the furniture and whatever is downwind. Build closing them into the close-down routine, not into a judgement call by whoever is on shift.

A vented canopy lets some pressure through and helps in gusty conditions, but it does not change the rule. If the site is genuinely exposed, a fixed structure is a better answer than a bigger umbrella.

What frame and canopy material should I choose?

Aluminium frames do not rust and are lighter to handle, which matters when staff open and close them twice a day. Steel is heavier and more rigid. Timber looks the best and needs the most care, so it suits a sheltered courtyard rather than a coastal footpath.

Canopies are a commercial acrylic or polyester fabric, and the two differ in how they hold colour and shed water. The specific fabric for a model is on its product page; the thing to confirm is that the canopy is replaceable on its own.

Can I get umbrellas printed with the venue name?

Sometimes, depending on the canopy and the supplier, and it is worth asking before you settle on a model rather than after. Print changes lead time and it usually means a minimum order.

If branding matters, ask us early with the number of umbrellas and the artwork you have. We will tell you what is possible on the models that otherwise suit the site.

Do I need a table with a hole, or a freestanding base?

A table hole with a matched base is the tidiest result and the most stable, because the table steadies the pole. A freestanding base is more flexible: the umbrella can be moved where the sun is, and the tables underneath can be rearranged.

Decide the table first. Round cafe tables are commonly specified with a centre hole; a bench run or a long rectangular cafe table usually wants a freestanding or cantilever umbrella beside it.

Can heaters be used under an umbrella?

Only with the clearances the heater's own product page specifies, and they differ between a portable heater standing on the ground and a panel heater mounted overhead. Do not work from a general figure, including ours — use the one in the heater's documentation.

In practice, overhead panel heaters and umbrellas compete for the same space, so venues often use umbrellas for daytime shade and mounted heaters under a solid roof. Outdoor heater accessories cover the mounting side.
