A counter top hot food display holds cooked food hot and in sight on a bench you already have, so pies, chips, dim sum and hot rolls are ready to hand over the moment somebody asks for one. Staff serve from behind, or customers serve themselves, depending on the door layout you pick.

Countertop space is at a premium in a cafe, takeaway, sushi shop or restaurant, so our countertop hot food displays include ultra-compact models with a couple of shelves for a tight servery up to models with space for 100 pies for a busy shop, so you can buy the size that suits your business at its current size, then size up as your business grows. We also stock matching refrigerated countertop displays, in square or round glass, so hot and cold can sit side by side and look like they were bought together. We ship food displays and the rest of your kitchen equipment anywhere in Australia.

These are the top FAQs for Counter Top Hot Food Displays

What sizes and layouts do you stock?

Sizes run from ultra-compact units with a couple of shelves up to models with space for 100 pies, in a range of formats and brands. Pies held at temperature, chips straight out of the deep fryer or dim sum ready to take away all have a model that suits.

Access is single-door or double-door. Single-door means staff serve from behind the cabinet; double-door lets customers reach in from the front as well.

How small do they get?

Our smallest models are around 550mm wide and 330mm high, with room for a single or double shelf. That is small enough to sit next to the till without getting in the way, and still hold a steady flow of hot food where customers can see it.

What are they made of?

Most countertop hot food displays are built in metal, usually stainless steel. The doors are normally tempered glass, which stands up to the heat and to being opened and closed all day.

How do I keep the running cost down?

Keep the doors shut when nobody is being served. That is the main thing. LED lighting on modern cabinets draws less power than older lamps as well.

Will it hold a steady temperature?

Yes. They are built to hold heat, both so the food is right to eat and for food safety. The thing that holds it steadiest is keeping the door closed between serves.

What do the Australian food safety rules ask for?

Holding temperature has to be maintained, and food has to be thrown out once it has been in the cabinet beyond its safe period. The cabinet helps with the first part, but you still need to check the core temperature of at-risk food yourself rather than trusting the display.

Use cabinets with glass or shields, keep pre-prepared food away from anything raw, and keep the cabinet out of reach of children. We stock options that cover all of that.

How do I clean it?

At the end of every shift. Clear out the remaining food first and throw out anything that has been held beyond its safe period.

Then take the shelves and trays out and wash them by hand or in a dishwasher if they are dishwasher safe. Wipe the inside out, get the crumbs and residue, then spray and wipe the glass. Go over it with a clean damp cloth so no soapy residue is left behind.

Check the door seals and the electrics every so often. A door that no longer seals lets the heat out and the food suffers for it.

How long can food sit in there?

It depends on the food, and meat needs the most care. Follow the HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control points) guidelines for your menu. Check the food through the day, take a core temperature where it matters, and do not drop a fresh batch in on top of one that has been held hot for a while.

If one menu item carries the shop, there is usually a cabinet built for it, and we stock those too.

Do they come with LED lighting?

Most models come with lighting so the food looks like something worth buying. The specification differs model to model, so tell our team what you need and they will point you at the right one.

Do they arrive assembled?

Most countertop hot food displays arrive assembled and ready to plug in. Some of the larger models take a few extra steps on site, depending on what the installation needs.

What else are counter top hot food displays called?

You will see countertop hot food displays used for the same kind of equipment. The name changes with the supplier and the region, not the job it does.
