A 20l urn heats and holds hot water so staff can pour tea and coffee straight from a tap instead of boiling kettles. A 20 litre urn holds around 80 cups at 250 ml, so a 20l hot water urn or a 20 ltr hot water urn gets a whole sitting served without a reheat stop. That is the size function venues, clubs and caterers buy most.

You will see it listed as a 20 litre hot water urn, a tea urn 20 litre, a 20l tea urn, a 20 ltr tea urn, a 20l water urn, a 20 litre water urn or a catering urn 20 litre. One appliance, many labels. Compare it with the 15 litre and 30 litre sizes, or see all commercial hot water urns.

These are the top FAQs for 20 Litre Hot Water Urn

How many drinks will a 20 litre urn serve?

Around 80 at a 250 ml cup. In practice plan on fewer, because guests fill above the line and staff draw water for other jobs.

If you are routinely serving past that in one break, run two urns or move up to a 40 litre urn.

Is a catering urn this size practical to transport?

Empty, yes. It is a standard piece of offsite catering equipment for exactly that reason: power point in, hot water out, no plumbing.

Carry it on a catering trolley with the rest of your buffet and table service equipment and fill from the venue tap.

How much bench space does a 20 litre urn take?

More than you expect, because you need clearance above for the lid and in front for the tap and a cup. Measure the depth of the bench and the height to any overhead shelf.

Where bench is tight, a kitchen bench overshelf moves the cups and teapots up and off the working surface.

Does a bigger tank cost more to run?

Only if you fill it when you do not need to. Heating 20 litres uses more energy than heating 10, so fill to the volume you will actually serve and keep the lid closed to hold the heat.

Well-insulated 304 stainless steel bodies lose less heat than thin or plastic ones, which is why they dominate the stainless steel equipment range.

Can a 20 litre urn hold water at a set temperature all day?

Models with a thermostat will hold, and that is the normal way to run a function service. All-day holding does use power, so switch off between sittings if the gap is long.

For back-to-back service, holding is cheaper than repeatedly reheating from cold.

What is the difference between a tea urn and a coffee percolator at this size?

An urn gives you hot water and you add whatever you are brewing. A percolator brews the coffee inside the tank, so it pours ready coffee and cannot then be used for tea.

Venues serving both usually keep an urn plus a commercial coffee percolator.

How do I descale a large urn?

Follow the maker's instructions on dose and dwell time, run the solution through the tap as well as the tank, then rinse until the water runs clear and tastes clean.

Descalers sit in commercial kitchen cleaning supplies, and manuals are on the product documents page.

Can I run two urns off the same bench?

Usually, but check the circuit rather than the socket count. Two high-draw appliances on one circuit is the common cause of a tripped breaker mid-service.
